The National Board of Revenue (NBR) plans to mandate proof of submission of a tax return (PSR) for renting venues for weddings and other events, and for obtaining or renewing licenses for hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centers, aiming to expand the tax base by including affluent individuals currently outside the tax net. A senior NBR official highlighted the need to bring high spenders without tax identification numbers into compliance. While experts welcome the move, industry insiders fear it may negatively impact business. Currently, PSR is required for 43 different services. Bangladesh has over 4,000 community centers and 16,500 medical facilities, according to respective associations and the Directorate General of Health Services.
