The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has reduced its revenue collection target for the fiscal year 2023-24 by Tk 20,000 crore due to poor tax collection performance. The revised target is now set at Tk 4 lakh 10 thousand crores, down from Tk 4 lakh 30 thousand crores initially. Despite pressure to meet IMF loan conditions requiring 5.5% of GDP revenue collection, challenges persist due to increased external debt repayments and expanding government budgets. NBR’s failure to implement reforms further complicates revenue goals. In the last six months, collections fell short of targets, averaging Tk 27,500,605 crores compared to the required Tk 40 thousand 723 crore monthly. NBR faces IMF demands to reform tax systems and reduce exemptions, with Tk 1 lakh 25 thousand 813 crore exemptions granted annually in the income tax sector alone.
