The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has cut the import duty on sugar from 30% to 15% to help reduce prices in the local market. As a result, the cost of importing raw sugar will drop by Tk 11.18 per kg, and refined sugar by Tk 14.26 per kg. Despite this, sugar prices in Dhaka have recently risen by 2%, now ranging from Tk 125 to Tk 135 per kg.
Industry experts, such as Taslim Shahriar from Meghna Group, expect the price reduction to happen gradually as current stocks are sold. The NBR made this decision following a recommendation from the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission (BTTC), which also called for stricter border control to prevent smuggling. The price stabilization is particularly important ahead of Ramadan, when sugar demand typically surges. Bangladesh relies on imports for 99% of its sugar needs, with most raw sugar coming from Brazil, while local production meets only 1% of the annual demand of 24 lakh tonnes.
