The Chattogram Customs and VAT Commissionerate has formed four committees to audit 18 companies of S Alam Group to verify their VAT payments. Joint commissioners Tafsir Uddin Bhuiyan and Kamrul Hasan are heading the teams, which comprise 20 customs officials. The audit will review financial transactions and purchase and sales records from the past five years, starting in 2019. Companies under scrutiny include S Alam Steel Ltd, SS Power Ltd, and S Alam Properties Ltd. This move follows a previous report that found VAT evasion totaling Tk 3,531 crore by S Alam Vegetable Oil Ltd and S Alam Super Edible Oil Ltd. The audit findings are due within 30 days.
