Bangladesh witnessed a substantial increase in the number of outbound workers, with a record 989,685 workers leaving the country during the first nine months of 2023. This marks a significant rise from the 874,739 workers who departed during the same period in the previous year. Despite the surge in outbound workers, the country is experiencing a decline in inward remittances.
In September 2023, Bangladesh received $1.34 billion in remittances, marking the lowest figure in 41 months. This figure represented a 16% drop from the previous month and a 13% decline year-on-year. A major factor contributing to this decline is the use of informal channels like “hundi” for sending money, which offers more favorable rates compared to formal channels. Experts are suggesting market-driven exchange rates and measures to curb the use of hundi to enhance remittance inflows.
