Bangladesh is set to begin importing hydropower from Nepal by September 2023. A 25-year power purchase agreement is in its final stages, with an initial 40 MW of hydropower to be imported. Despite no direct border, Bangladesh and Nepal will utilize Indian transmission lines and a tripartite agreement with India is expected to be signed soon. The cost of Nepal’s electricity is anticipated to be lower than that of India’s, possibly around Tk 4 to Tk 4.5 per unit. Challenges like seasonal availability and electricity export to Nepal have been discussed, urging experts to suggest an uninterrupted power supply agreement for 30 years.
