Nepal has expressed interest in importing electricity from Bangladesh during the winter season, and both countries are in negotiations for this potential deal. While Bangladesh is keen to import hydropower from Nepal during the summer, Nepal has proposed importing surplus electricity from Bangladesh to meet increased winter demand caused by room heaters being extensively used for warmth. During winter, Nepalese power stations face reduced water availability for electricity generation.
Bangladesh’s electricity demand drops below 9,000MW in winter, and the country has initiated plans to import 40MW of hydropower from Nepal and India, using Indian transmission lines. However, the electricity export is delayed due to pending trilateral agreements with India and tariff determinations between Bangladesh and Nepal.
