The Directorate of National Consumer Rights’ Protection (DNCRP) has been focusing on supervising the goods and services sector since 2010 to safeguard consumer interests. However, existing laws lack provisions to address digital commerce fraud. To combat this issue, the Cabinet Division has proposed a three-year jail term or a fine of up to Tk 3 lakh, or both, for operating an illegal digital commerce business without proper licensing or registration. This amendment aims to hold criminals accountable in the field of digital commerce. The draft amendment is in its final stage and will soon be presented to the cabinet for approval. The upcoming amendment includes 15 new sections and sub-sections related to digital commerce. The amendment emphasizes the requirement for registration and licensing for digital commerce businesses and sets penalties for non-compliance. Additionally, measures are outlined to protect consumer rights and punish offenders. This amendment seeks to regulate and monitor digital commerce activities, providing consumers with a safer online marketplace.
