The budget deficit for the next fiscal year is expected to reach Tk 2.50 trillion as the government prepares a slightly expansionary budget amidst ongoing elevated inflationary pressure, officials said, despite prioritizing inflation control. The national budget for fiscal 2024-25 is likely to be Tk 7.969 trillion, with one-third of the outlay representing the gap between income and expenditure targets. Economists argue that this large deficit contradicts the government’s goal of controlling inflation, which has remained close to double digits for over a year. In April, the inflation rate was 9.74%, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). Ministry of Finance officials maintain that higher expenditure is necessary to sustain the country’s economic growth.
