Bangladesh witnessed a 9.52% drop in export earnings from non-apparel items, amounting to $8.52 billion in the last fiscal year. Despite this decline, the country’s overall exports increased by 6.67% to $55.56 billion in FY2022-23, with the clothing sector contributing 84.58% to total export earnings.
Experts emphasize the need to reduce dependence on the readymade garment (RMG) sector and boost non-apparel exports. Product diversification is considered crucial but requires comprehensive, time-bound development plans and technology upgradation. Additionally, building the confidence of global buyers and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) are seen as essential steps to growing non-apparel sectors such as jute, leather, pharmaceuticals, furniture, and agro-processing.
