The amount of non-performing loans (NPLs) has surged to Tk 180,000 crore as of March this year, a significant increase from Tk 22,000 crore in 2009. A prominent banker and chairman of the Association of Bankers has commented that the previous government’s 15-year tenure has left the banking sector in an unprecedented crisis. He expressed gratitude to the students for their courageous protests, which he believes restored freedom of speech that was previously suppressed. The banker also highlighted the need for reforming the central bank and expressed optimism about the new Governor, a renowned economist. Additionally, a Director of BGMEA criticized the Chairman of NBR, accusing him of leading corruption, and called for reforms in the sector from the interim government led by Dr. Yunus.
