Several power projects approved without tender by the Awami League regime, ousted in August 2024, continue to receive excessive capacity charges, with some being up to 73% higher than they should be, as per a BPDB analysis. Capacity charges guarantee payments to power plants irrespective of their actual power production, leading to significant profits for investors. The interim government canceled the special power act used by the past government to approve these projects but has not taken action against existing power plants, citing difficulties. Critics highlight the misuse of public funds and the role of the power sector in money laundering. Key examples include Confidence Power, which receives a capacity charge of $13.79 MW/month (should be $7.99), and Acorn Infrastructure Services at $12.75 MW/month (should be $7.99). The AL government spent $32 billion in the power sector before its ouster, with significant sums paid in capacity charges over the years.
