Norway Invests $1.364M in Eco Friendly Shipbreaking

Industry: Shipping

Norway is set to invest $1.364 million in Bangladesh’s shipbreaking yards, transforming them into environmentally friendly facilities. The “Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling Project (SENSREC) Phase-3” will be a joint effort by the Ministry of Industries, the Norwegian government, and the International Maritime Organisation.

The initiative aims to align existing shipbreaking yards with the Hong Kong Convention, necessitating substantial foreign investment. Currently, only four out of 167 yards comply. The project will offer technical assistance for capacity building, effective legislation, and establish a facility for hazardous waste management. The move supports Bangladesh’s commitment to the Hong Kong Convention and addresses environmental concerns in the shipbreaking industry.
