In the first quarter of 2023, the number of bank accounts in Bangladesh holding Tk 1 crore or more reached 1,10,192, indicating an increase of 246 compared to the previous quarter. The total amount deposited in these accounts also rose significantly by Tk 13,272.44 crore, reaching Tk 6,90,877.50 crore during the same period. These figures were revealed in the “Quarterly Schedule Bank Statistics” report published by the Bangladesh Bank.
Year-on-year comparison demonstrates a significant surge as well, with the number of accounts with deposits of Tk 1 crore or above increasing by 6,595, and the total deposited amount rising by Tk 27,372.28 crore. These accounts contribute to 42.83% of the overall bank deposits, which stood at Tk 16,13,062.64 crore at the end of March 2023. Although specific data on individual accounts exceeding Tk 1 crore were not disclosed, the report suggests that the number of private accounts surpasses public accounts, primarily due to the growing number of companies and the increasing adoption of cashless transactions at the institutional level.
