Following the departure of Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder on August 9, Deputy Governor Nurun Nahar has been appointed to assume the governor’s duties. On August 11, the central bank’s Financial Institutions Department issued an order directing the deputy governors to operate their respective departments until a new governor is chosen, with Nurun Nahar managing the governor’s daily communication.
Talukder’s resignation came amid a wave of high-profile resignations following the fall of the Awami League-led government. On August 7, a group of Bangladesh Bank personnel called for the resignation of the governor, four deputy governors, and other top officials, accusing them of aiding financial malfeasance. This pressure resulted in the resignation of one deputy governor and promises by others to step down soon.
