Excessive rainfall in early October 2023 has delayed the cultivation of Kondo onions in Bangladesh. Typically, farmers plant seedlings of this onion variety before harvesting it in early winter, ensuring a fresh supply of onions in the market. This delay may lead to an increase in onion prices, following a previous hike in August due to supply shortages.
Currently, onions are selling for Tk 3,200 to Tk 3,400 per maund at wholesale. Pabna, the country’s largest onion-producing district, has experienced severe waterlogging due to the incessant rain, delaying cultivation by up to 10 days. The delayed cultivation may affect production and lead to higher prices if unfavorable weather persists. However, some experts believe that the situation should not pose significant problems as water has already receded from most fields. In Pabna alone, 53,270 hectares of land are dedicated to onion cultivation this year, with the Kondo variety taking up about 8,600 hectares.
