The prices of onion sets, crucial for early winter cultivation in Bangladesh, have doubled, impacting farmers and potentially leading to increased onion prices in the market. Onion set prices rose from Tk 1,500 to Tk 3,500 per maund (37 kilograms).
As a result, the production cost for Kondo onion, an early winter variety, has surged to Tk 60,000 per bigha from Tk 30,000. In Sujanagar upazila, the primary onion-producing hub, farmers are scaling back cultivation due to higher costs. The increased production cost includes rising fertilizer prices, higher labor costs, and leasing expenses, leading to concerns among farmers about achieving expected profits.
