Onion Wholesale Prices Drop Tk. 82 to 92 Per Kg

Industry: Commodity

Ongoing strikes and protests in Bangladesh have led to a drop in wholesale onion prices at the Chaktai-Khatunganj market. The increased supply of Indian onions has contributed to this reduction.

Last week, wholesale prices ranged from Tk 115-120 per kg, but yesterday witnessed prices at Tk 80-92 per kg, marking a decrease of Tk 25-35 per kg. The fluctuation is attributed to disruptions caused by opposition party activities. The market experienced an onion crisis at the beginning of the week, exacerbated by a $28 per ton tax on Indian onion exports.

However, with renewed onion arrivals in Khatunganj, prices have lowered. Over 90% of onions in Chittagong markets come from India, with minimal demand for Myanmar onions. The disruption in transportation due to strikes caused a temporary decrease in onion supply. The market anticipates an improvement as onions resume arriving in Khatunganj.
