Prices of essential food items in Dhaka’s kitchen markets are starting to decline after a surge during Ramadan’s first week. Onions dropped to Tk70/kg, from Tk90, and eggs fell below Tk10.49 per egg, now selling at Tk120/dozen. Eggplant and cucumber prices decreased to Tk40-70/kg and Tk50-60/kg, respectively, from Tk80-120/kg. Broiler chicken dropped to Tk210-215/kg from Tk220-230/kg. Lemon prices also slightly decreased. Despite this, some items remain above government-fixed prices; eggplant exceeds Tk49.75/kg, and broiler chicken surpasses Tk175/kg. The decline is attributed to increased market supply, especially from major onion-producing regions like Pabna, and lower demand during Ramadan. Traders credit market monitoring and government price controls for the decrease but express dissatisfaction with the verification process and inconsistencies in price lists.
