The “Asia-Pacific Population and Development Report 2023,” published by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, states that more than 20% of Bangladesh’s youth, aged 15 to 24, are classified as Not in Employment, Education, or Training (NEET).
The report highlights the disruptive impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on young adults, making them more likely to exit the labor market. The situation exacerbates challenges in starting careers and establishing homes. Similar NEET populations are observed in India, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Afghanistan, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Turkey. The report suggests empowering youth, recognizing them as agents of change, and investing in education, employment, and health services to harness the demographic dividend. It advocates for targeted policies addressing youth unemployment, underemployment, and informal employment for inclusive job creation and skill development.
