In FY2023-24, Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) faced significant challenges as its market capitalisation-to-GDP ratio dropped sharply to 10.22% from 17.39% in the previous year, and the price-earnings (P/E) ratio reached an eight-year low of 10.22. DSEX, the key index, fell by 16.01%, closing at 5,328.40 points compared to 6,344.09 points at the beginning of the fiscal year. Investor confidence waned amidst weak macroeconomic conditions and global uncertainties, exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Despite regulatory efforts to stabilize the market, including removing floor prices and recalibrating circuit breakers, persistent challenges like low trading volumes and investor hesitancy persisted, reflecting a difficult year for Bangladesh’s capital market.
