The price of wheat flour in Bangladesh has surged, compounding challenges for consumers. Coarse flour (atta) now ranges from Tk55-68 per kg, up from Tk45-60, while finer flour (maida) increased to Tk65-75 from Tk58-68 per kg. Major mills, including TK, Akij, S Alam, Meghna, and Bashundhara, raised prices by Tk5-7 per kg in the past two weeks of November,2023. Wholesale rates for loose atta rose from Tk38-40 to Tk44-47, and maida from Tk52-55 to Tk58-60. The state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh confirmed a 14% increase in loose atta and a 10% rise in packed flour prices within two weeks. The price fluctuations are attributed to the rising value of the US dollar against the Bangladeshi taka, affecting wheat imports. While some cite increased dollar payments, global wheat prices have decreased over the past year, falling by 30%. The country heavily depends on wheat imports, with annual demand at 7.0-7.5 million tonnes, and limited local production at 1.0 million tonnes.
