The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) forecasts a record paddy production of 58.5 million tonnes in 2023, a 1.2% increase from the previous year’s 57.77 million tonnes. The Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) Director General anticipates a potential increase of 7-8 lakh tonnes in rice production, surpassing the FAO’s estimate.
The Aman paddy crop, constituting 35% of the annual output, is currently being harvested and is expected to continue until January 2024. The FAO reports localized crop losses in the Chattogram division due to heavy rains and floods in August. The Boro paddy production is estimated at a record high of 31.1 million tonnes, while the Aus paddy crop is projected to be below average. Approximately 78.28% of Aman harvesting has been completed nationwide, with high yields despite natural disasters. The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) aimed to produce 171.79 lakh tonnes of rice from 59.33 lakh hectares of land during the Aman season.
