The parliamentary standing committee on Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Ministry in Bangladesh expressed serious concerns about the stalled Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund, which was deposited in the then Farmers Bank (now Padma Bank Limited). The committee, led by an Awami League MP, has called for necessary actions to recover Tk 536 crore, along with accumulated interest, which has been stuck in the bank since 2016.
The trust deposited the money in 2015, with a due date in 2016, but they have received only Tk 74 crore in seven years. Including interest, the total due now stands at approximately Tk 827 crore. The bank was granted an additional eight years to repay the money by the Ministry of Environment. Additionally, the committee is concerned about environmental pollution during upcoming national elections and has asked the ministry to propose ways to conduct a “green election” by addressing issues like the use of sound amplifiers, plastic, polythene, and banners.
