The Bangladesh Bridges Authority (BBA) has requested nearly half the cost of constructing the country’s largest road-rail bridge from the Ministry of Railways. BBA, responsible for the Padma Bridge project, has made a Tk 62 billion ($725 million) claim for constructing the rail portion of the bridge. The entire bridge project cost Tk 326.05 billion ($3.8 billion), with the road part completed in June 2022. Bangladesh Railway (BR), responsible for the rail portion, has been installing tracks with Chinese loans, set to be completed in June. Both BBA and BR discussed the claim but couldn’t reach an agreement, forming a committee to further assess the demand’s legitimacy. The repayment of the loan by BBA and BR’s free financing could be part of the committee’s considerations.
