The Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) has issued a notice to Padma Islami Life Insurance, questioning their failure to settle claims worth Tk 211.82 crore last year. This follows the insurer’s unaudited financial reports for 2023, revealing only Tk 21.88 crore in payouts out of Tk 233.70 crore owed to policyholders. IDRA asserts that claims must be settled within 90 days as per the Insurance Act 2010. Padma Islami attributes the delay to a liquidity crisis, aggravated by poor investments. The company’s life fund is reportedly in deficit. Despite settling claims at a decreasing rate in recent years, Padma Islami maintains 167 branches and 600 agents nationwide with a paid-up capital of Tk 388.80 million.
