Patenga Container Terminal Faces Operational Delays

Industry: Shipping

Despite the completion of construction one and a half years ago, the Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) in Chattogram remains non-operational, disappointing businesses. The terminal, costing Tk 12.29 billion, lacks appointed contractors, hindering progress.

The PCT’s backup facility needs customs approval as a ‘Customs Bonded Area’ for import-export operations. The Bangladesh Shipping Agents Association (BSAA) Chairman criticizes authorities for inadequate planning, suggesting the government streamline infrastructure plans to avoid idle constructions.

The American Chamber of Commerce and Industry President emphasizes the need for swift finalization of draft agreements and cost-benefit analysis to expedite operational benefits. The Chittagong Port Authority expects PCT operation within one to one and a half months pending successful procedures. The terminal’s completion aims to alleviate congestion at Chattogram Customs Houses.
