The Payra Thermal Power Plant in Patuakhali has temporarily halted operations for maintenance and to facilitate the test commissioning of a nearby $2.5 billion coal-fired power plant by RPCL-Norinco International Power Limited (RNPL). The new 1,320 MW plant, located two kilometers away, will undergo testing of its transmission lines, requiring a shutdown of the Payra-Gopalganj line for up to 75 days. Trial production is set for January, with one unit contributing to the national grid by March and the second by May, raising Bangladesh’s coal-based power capacity to 7,000 MW. The RNPL plant, which uses advanced technology to minimize environmental impact, will burn high-quality Indonesian coal and produce electricity at a lower cost (Tk 9.85 per unit) compared to other thermal plants.
