The 1,244 MW Payra power plant in Bangladesh is set to resume electricity generation after a 20-day pause due to a coal shortage. The plant received a shipment of imported coal from Indonesia, enabling the resumption of operations. Initially, one unit with a capacity of around 622 MW will be operational, followed by the second unit on 1 July 2023.
The resumption of power generation is expected to improve the country’s electricity supply situation to some extent. The government paid approximately $100 million to facilitate coal import, allowing the Bangladesh-China Power Company Ltd (BCPCL) to open letters of credit for importing 17 cargoes. The plant had experienced a coal crisis due to a shortage of US dollars, resulting in nationwide power outages. The unpaid coal-purchase bill amounted to around $294 million, leading to the shutdown of the entire power plant for about 20 days.
