The Payra 1,320MW Thermal Power Plant in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali has resumed full production following a two-month halt for maintenance works on its second unit and test runs of a neighbouring facility. The second unit began generating electricity at around 9:30pm on Tuesday after completing maintenance that began on November 9, 2024. Now, the plant is supplying its full 1,320-megawatt (MW) capacity to the national grid.
Additionally, a neighbouring facility, the RPCL-NORINCO International Power Limited (RNPL) plant, has been undergoing experimental production. The first unit of this facility, with a capacity of 660MW, is expected to be commissioned within the second week of January, with commercial production slated to begin in March. The second unit of the RNPL plant is set to commence production in June, contributing an additional 1,320MW to the national grid.
Both plants utilize ultra-supercritical technology designed to ensure minimal environmental impact, with the cost of electricity generation estimated at Tk 9 per unit. The completion of these facilities is expected to meet a significant portion of the country’s electricity demand.
