In a bid to enhance tax compliance among businesses, the Finance Minister has proposed imposing a penalty ranging from Tk 20,000 to Tk 50,000 on establishments that fail to display their income tax return certificates prominently. This measure, announced during the budget presentation for the fiscal year 2024-25, aims to address the stark disparity between the number of registered organizations with Tax Identification Numbers (TIN) and those actually filing annual returns. While over 250,000 entities possess TINs nationwide, only around 50,000 on average submit their tax returns annually. By mandating the display of return certificates and introducing financial penalties for non-compliance, the government seeks to incentivize businesses to fulfill their tax obligations transparently, ultimately broadening the tax net and bolstering revenue collection from the business sector.
