The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) withheld the calculation of per capita income in dollars for the fiscal year 2022-23, leading to speculation about the reasons behind it. While GDP and national income calculations usually include figures in dollars, BBS opted to release the data solely in terms of rupees due to significant fluctuations in the dollar exchange rate. Share Biz, however, estimated the per capita income in dollars based on Bangladesh Bank’s average exchange rate, revealing a decrease from $2,793 to $2,750, marking a $43 drop, a first in recent years. Despite population reduction, per capita GDP and national income in terms of Taka showed an increase. The decision to omit dollar calculations raises questions about transparency and official exchange rates. Director General of BBS, Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, cited exchange rate volatility as the reason for the omission but declined to comment further on Share Biz’s figures.
