The outstanding revenue owed to Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources Corporation (Petrobangla) and Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) amounts to approximately Tk 54,775 crore. Despite efforts to convene meetings and make decisions for collection, these dues have remained uncollected for years. Petrobangla alone is owed Tk 70,796 crore, including Tk 25,928 crore for VAT and supplementary duty, and Tk 44,868 crore for interest spanning from fiscal years 1997-98 to 2016-17. Recent discussions at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) aimed to expedite the collection process, involving various agencies and officials to resolve the issue swiftly. Measures such as book adjustments and allocations from the finance department are being considered to settle these outstanding amounts, crucial for meeting NBR’s revenue targets for the fiscal year 2023-24.
