State-owned Petrobangla has erected memorial plaques at five key gas fields – Bakhrabad, Titas, Rashidpur, Kailashtila, and Habiganj – commemorating Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s role in securing Bangladesh’s energy future. These plaques, set to be inaugurated on Energy Security Day, recognize Bangabandhu’s acquisition of these fields from Shell Oil in 1975 for £4.5 million (Tk 178.60 million). These fields now yield a cumulative gas reserve of approximately 5.23 Tcf, valued at around Tk 3.17 trillion. Over 10.26 Tcf of gas, valued at Tk 6.21 trillion, has been produced from these fields since then. The gesture underscores the visionary leadership’s contribution to the nation’s energy stability.
