Petrobangla Faces Tk 195 Billion Dues from Power Plants

Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and public power plants owe Petrobangla Tk 195 billion for gas consumption until mid-November, impacting the state-owned company’s liquidity and tax payments, officials said. Despite receiving Tk 20 billion in subsidies earlier this year, the Energy Ministry sought an additional Tk 5 billion to clear dues. Government liabilities for capacity charges to IPPs and rental plants rose to Tk 46.47 billion by June 2024, an 84.62% increase since December 2023. Petrobangla’s unpaid taxes and VAT now total Tk 350 billion. Selling gas at subsidized rates and buying power at higher rates have deepened financial challenges.
