The Bangladesh government has allocated a significant portion of its power division budget to the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), receiving Tk 10,634 crore out of Tk 29,230 crore for 2024-25. This focus aims to enhance the transmission and distribution networks to maximize the utilization of the country’s increased power generation capacity, which rose from 4,942 MW in 2009 to 30,277 MW in 2023-24. Notable projects include the Power Network Strengthening project, the Barapukuria-Bogura-Kaliakair 400kv project, and upgrades in Chattogram. Despite the reduced overall budget, the government’s strategy emphasizes sustainable and reliable electricity supply, implementing smart grid networks, and addressing distribution inefficiencies. However, experts criticize the limited allocation for renewable energy and local gas exploration, urging more focus on domestic energy resources over fuel imports.
