Plastic Export Reached $209.86 Million

Bangladesh’s plastic product exports have tripled over 13 years, reaching $209.86 million in the 2022-23 fiscal year, up from $68.76 million in 2010-11. The country is now the 12th largest global exporter of plastic goods. The International Plastic Fair (IPF) is set to host 300 foreign companies occupying 700 stalls and 54 local companies at 161 stalls, with participation from 20 countries. The event is expected to attract investment and expand market size. The local plastic sector is growing at a rate of 20% annually, with exports reaching 126 countries, including the USA, Canada, and various European Union nations, as well as China, India, and Nepal. The fair will showcase new machinery, essential for the sector’s future challenges, and highlight the emergence of high-quality plastic products in the global market.

The Ministry of Labor and Employment has announced a new minimum wage structure for tannery workers under the Bangladesh Labor Act, 2006. Effective from November 2024, the minimum wage in divisional cities and Savar is Tk 18,001, while in other areas it is Tk 17,048. Compared to the 2018 rates, wages have increased by 33.34%, with five grades introduced.
