Poor quality and undersized bricks are impacting construction quality and increasing expenses, as highlighted in a report by the Local Government Division. The standard for bricks, set by the Local Government Engineering Department, specifies dimensions and composition.
However, most conventional brick kilns fail to meet these standards, leading to a need for extra bricks, increasing construction costs. The irregularities arise from variations in the quality of raw materials, with some kilns intentionally producing substandard bricks for profit. Industry experts, including Tanveerul Haque Probal and Tariqul Islam, stress the importance of machine-made bricks for quality, but availability and cost challenges persist.
The government aims to shift towards concrete blocks after 2025, as the brick industry currently employs about 10 lakh people and contributes 1% to the country’s GDP.
