Despite the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection’s (DNCRP) nationwide market monitoring efforts, potato and onion prices in Bangladesh continue to surpass government-set rates. The DNCRP has conducted 606 drives since September 13, fining 1,068 traders a total of Tk 44.34 lakh for selling these commodities above the designated prices.
In Dhaka, potatoes are being sold for Tk 45-50 per kilogram (government-set price: Tk 35-36), while locally produced onions are priced at Tk 78-85 per kilogram (government-set price: Tk 64-65). Eggs, however, align with the government-set price of Tk 12 each. The DNCRP director general attributes the price challenges to powerful syndicates and profit margins of 15 to 40 percent in the supply chain.
To address the issue, the DNCRP is conducting drives to enforce government-set prices and promote transparent transactions. Importing potatoes is also being considered to ensure price compliance, as some traders in Munshiganj, Bogura, Rangpur, and Nilphamari sell potatoes above the recommended price.
