Driven by last year’s high potato prices, Bangladeshi farmers have significantly expanded potato cultivation, with an increase of 64,000 hectares compared to 2024. However, there are concerns about whether they will achieve the expected prices. Early harvesting has already begun, leading to price declines, with potatoes currently selling for Tk40 per kg in Dhaka. The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) reports that farmers have cultivated 5.21 lakh hectares, surpassing the government’s target by 54,000 hectares. Despite the increased cultivation, experts worry about potential price drops and call for government intervention to ensure fair prices. Agricultural economist Dr. Jahangir Alam Khan emphasizes the need for government procurement and proper market management to stabilize the potato market. The Bangladesh Cold Storage Association also suggests that the government consider export options if production exceeds storage capacity. The situation requires effective implementation and action to support farmers and maintain market balance.
