The import of Indian potatoes through Dinajpur’s Hili land port resumed on September 25 after a 77-day halt due to price parity issues between domestic and imported varieties. The resumption followed a government decision to reduce duties on Indian potatoes from 15% to 3%. On the first day of import, 47 tonnes arrived, brought in by Messrs Priyam Enterprise from Jalpaiguri, India. Domestic prices for large potatoes are currently Tk 50 per kg, small red potatoes at Tk 55, and imported varieties at Tk 65, reflecting a price increase of Tk 2-5 per kg compared to the previous week. Importers noted that the wholesale price for Indian potatoes is $180 per tonne, with local prices set at Tk 42 per kg. The import aims to stabilize the domestic market, and there has been an increase in wholesale buyers since the arrival of Indian potatoes.
