Following government approval for potato imports, Hili Land Port in Dinajpur has witnessed a swift reduction in local potato prices by 10 taka per kilogram within three days. Importers note that continuous imports may further decrease prices, emphasizing the impact of government decisions on market dynamics.
The government granted permission for potato imports from India on October 30, leading to the arrival of 178 metric tons within one day. Potato sellers confirm the drop in prices, with potatoes now selling at 40 taka per kilogram compared to the previous 55-60 taka. Personnel from Hili Panama Port Limited states that this marks the first-time potato imports have occurred through Hili Land Port, aimed at controlling local market prices.
Clearance is ongoing for the substantial stock of imported potatoes. Reports suggest around 43 individuals have obtained permits for importing approximately 35,000 metric tons of potatoes through Hili Land Port.
