The government’s decision to permit the import of potatoes from India has rapidly impacted the local market in Dinajpur. Within a day, the price of domestic potatoes has decreased by Tk10 to Tk11 per kg, with local prices dropping from Tk35-40 to Tk24-30. This sudden reduction has spurred increased sales, meeting buyer demand.
Previously, low supply had driven prices up to Tk60-70 per kg, posing affordability challenges for the poor. The recent emergence of new domestic potatoes did not significantly lower prices. Customers in the Hili market expressed surprise at the unprecedented price drop, noting it as a 10-year low.
