The surge in potato prices, particularly in Gazipur’s Shripur Upazila Bazar, has sparked concern among consumers. On October 25, potatoes were observed being sold at 60-65 taka per kilogram, while the local red variety was priced at 70 taka. Damaged potatoes were available at a reduced rate of 60-65 taka.
The price hike, reflected in Rajshahi as well, saw an increase of 10 taka per kilogram. This rise is attributed to heightened demand following vegetable losses due to rain. Although the government had set price limits on September 14 (26-27 taka per kg for potatoes and 35-36 taka for damaged ones), these were not effectively enforced, with potatoes selling at 45-50 taka. The Consumers Association of Bangladesh emphasizes the need for improved policies to curb escalating prices.
Experts believe it is important to underscore local market management and enhanced transportation to alleviate unnecessary costs. Addressing these concerns is crucial, especially with the upcoming elections.
