Poultry farmers in Bangladesh are facing significant losses as the price of each egg at the farm level has dropped by Tk 3 to Tk 3.5 in just November 2023. The decline followed the Commerce Ministry’s decision to allow five firms to import five crore pieces of eggs to increase supply and control prices.
Farmers report losses ranging from Tk 0.50 to Tk 3 per egg, with production costs ranging from Tk 8 to Tk 8.50 per egg. Poultry farmers in Dinajpur and Bogura are also experiencing severe setbacks, selling eggs for Tk 8.60 and Tk 8.30 to Tk 8.50, respectively. Experts suggest the need for swift action to stabilize prices and ensure fair remuneration for farmers. The sudden drop in prices, attributed to imports, raises concerns about middlemen’s role in manipulating the market, causing losses for farmers.
