The poultry sector in Bangladesh is grappling with inefficiencies and deteriorating government-run chicken farms, raising questions about their management. There are 28 government chicken farms in the country, most of which suffer from inadequate infrastructure and staffing shortages. Recent investigations have revealed that out of 70 sheds across 19 farms, 49 have become non-functional, and most operational sheds are in poor condition.
Additionally, 20 out of 25 farms reported labor shortages. While government farms aim to provide chicks to marginal farmers and encourage commercial farming, private enterprises have taken the lead with modern, commercial farms. The poultry sector, which relies heavily on broiler chickens, faces instability due to a lack of government-backed commercial chick production, leaving private firms to control pricing and supplies. Stakeholders urge government farms to play a more substantial role in chick production for commercial purposes to benefit both marginal farmers and the market’s stability.
