The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) reported a decline in the country’s poverty rate from 31.5% in 2010 to 24.3% in 2016. However, a recent review by the World Bank suggests higher poverty levels than official data, with a gap of 5.5-5.8 percentage points in 2010 and 1.7-2.3 points in 2016. The World Bank provided technical support for the BBS Household Income-Expenditure-2022 survey, revealing discrepancies in poverty rates. BBS-affiliated individuals attribute the variance to methodological changes, while policymakers note potential statistical inaccuracies in mass surveys. The World Bank’s report prompts discussion among economists, highlighting the need for multidimensional poverty measurement and reduced survey intervals. Former Minister of State for Planning, also acknowledges the evolving data quality and procedural improvements, suggesting a permissible error margin of up to 5%.
