Despite the government’s boasts of strong renewable energy targets, there is a huge disparity between rhetoric and reality. While policymakers have proclaimed ambitions to build 10,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2030, official documents show a far smaller pipeline.
Currently, Bangladesh generates only 1,374 MW of renewable energy. Although there are projects under construction and in the planning stages, the total capacity expected for completion by 2030 is closer to 4,000 megawatts (MW). To close the deficit, the government is considering importing large volumes of renewable energy from neighboring countries. This emphasizes Bangladesh’s difficulty in fulfilling its renewable energy ambitions, as well as its reliance on external sources to achieve those aims.
