Power generation companies, including rental ones, may lose their zero-duty benefit on importing machinery, equipment, and spare parts starting the fiscal year 2024-25. The proposed change entails a 5 percent customs duty, marking a shift from the previous duty-free status enjoyed since 2008. The government-initiated duty exemptions to boost private investment in power production during a period of severe deficit. However, extended contracts and ongoing advantages have prompted a reconsideration of these benefits. The move aims to increase revenue collection and decrease dependency on borrowing, with investors in the sector receiving Tk 1,853 crore in duty exemptions from July 2022 to March 2024. Currently, there are 18 rental power plants operating, providing 1,170MW, with 797MW operating on a “No Electricity No Payment” basis under contract renewals.
