The average cost of power generation in Bangladesh rose from Tk 6.61 per unit in FY 2020-21 to Tk 11.04 in FY 2022-23, and then slightly dropped to Tk 11.02 in FY 2023-24. Despite a decrease in fuel costs, higher capacity charges, driven by exchange rate increases and new power plants, offset these savings. In FY 2023-24, diesel and furnace oil were the most expensive at Tk 44.64 and Tk 25.50 per unit, while cheaper sources included hydropower (Tk 2.17) and gas (Tk 6.20). The power generation capacity reached 26,242 MW, with 41% utilization, producing 934.02 billion units at an average fuel cost of Tk 6.24 and a capacity charge of Tk 4.24.
